A Season-by-Season Roof Maintenance Checklist
Small, regular maintenance is what actually extends a roof's lifespan — here's what to do and when.
Spring
Clear gutters and downspouts of winter debris, check for any damage from winter storms or ice dams, and schedule a professional inspection if you didn't have one in the fall — spring is also the start of central Indiana's active storm season, so it's a good checkpoint before demand (and pricing) rises with storm activity.
Summer
Check attic ventilation performance during peak heat (see our ventilation guide), trim back any tree branches that have grown closer to the roofline over the year, and inspect after any significant summer storm — this is peak hail and wind season for central Indiana.
Fall
Clear gutters again after leaf drop — this is the most important gutter cleaning of the year for wooded lots — and get a pre-winter inspection to catch anything that needs addressing before ice and snow season. This is also the ideal window to schedule any needed repairs before winter installation conditions become a factor.
Winter
Watch for ice dam formation after snow events, and use a roof rake to clear excessive snow buildup if it's safely accessible from the ground. Avoid walking on a snow- or ice-covered roof yourself. If an ice dam or leak develops, it's worth addressing promptly rather than waiting for spring, since ongoing water intrusion compounds damage.
